When did we know what we wanted to be when we grew up? How do we know architecture, interior design, or even design strategy is the right path? These are some really daunting questions that college-bound students often are faced with today when making a decision before going off to college. They’re only 18 years old and need to make a life changing decision that can impact their entire career for the rest of their lives. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there before.
But what if they were able to experience and discover what it feels like to be a designer before making that leap of faith? NYCO is an educational start-up that empowers Chinese college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in the arts and design fields. They provide students with a unique immersive program that allow them to explore, learn, create, and discover new opportunities first hand in the New York design industry. Within their 14-day immersive curriculum, one of the touchpoints to their adventure is visiting our office and getting a glimpse into what it might be like to be a Design Strategist or an Architect/Interior Designer. Hosted by our Strategy & Discovery and Architecture/Interiors group, the students from NYCO learn about our distinct strategic design process that informs the design of the built environment through qualitative and quantitative analysis. They also gain an understanding of the type of exciting, cutting edge clients we work with to make sure our work tells our client’s story.
NYCO recently received an award on Core77 for Service Design. We are really excited to be partnering with them and enabling young talent to make informed decisions of their career path into the field of design. At HLW we pursue a broader discourse on design providing independent research, teaching in academic institutions, presenting at conferences, and nurturing students like those from NYCO. These unique experiences are fed into our project delivery in a meaningful way; and it’s why we are able to distinguish ourselves in the design industry.
